Perhaps things would have been different for Captain Dung Nguyen had he presented senior airman Rex Thompson to the base’s superiors after nabbing him for stealing dollar bills meant for the Vietnamese army. Having spared Thompson and secured the money - which Thompson steals again - Nguyen finds himself in deep trouble when his superiors discover the money is missing and blame him. As a punishment, Nguyen is sent on suicide missions in the ongoing Vietnamese war. He somehow survives and later moves to the US with his family to start a new life. Nguyen settles in Biloxi, Mississippi, and becomes a shrimper. As if fate had bound them together, Nguyen encounters Thompson, who is also a shrimper in Biloxi. As if on cue, Nguyen is caught up in a feud between his employee and Thompson’s kids, and something bad happens to him. All this happens before Nguyen has a chance to confront Thompson about the incident in Vietnam. Will the truth about the incident ever come out? If you love suspense-laced novels with a gripping tale of war, family drama, and teenage life, Bycatch by Alexander Blevens is a must-read for you. Blevens had me hooked on his book, flipping through the pages with his unique and great style of writing. He switches between the scenes of his designated characters effortlessly, moving between the present and the past. He gives the story a perfect setting for both the mid and late twentieth centuries. Blevens is a master of his art and a magnificent writer. He forges an intriguing plot, entwined with spell-binding cliffhangers and mind-blowing plot twists. He makes his action scenes tremendously dramatic. I could feel the agony, despair, loathing, resentment, and other emotions in the characters. The cast was exciting and wonderfully developed. Blevens brings out their traits boldly and aggressively. Rex Thompson never seems to make any right choices in his life, even when it comes to his kids. I loved the book and I’m eager to get my hands on more of Blevens’ work.
