Caerwin and the Roman Dog by Lizzie Ashworth is the story of Caerwin, a young Cornovii woman, who is taken as a slave when the Romans won the battle for her home. Marcellus is Caerwin's new master. She fights against everything that Marcellus stands for, and even fights against her own heart as her slave Senna tries to show her that she hasn't lost everything as Caerwin believes. Though Caerwin struggles to untangle her thoughts and feelings towards Marcellus, she doesn't come to fully understand them or the things Senna told her until she stands on the field, watching yet another battle unfold. Will she be reunited with the man she loves? Will she watch him fall? Will Caerwin survive the day or will she fall under a soldier's sword?

Caerwin and the Roman Dog by Lizzie Ashworth is full of beautiful imagery. All the characters are easy to relate to, especially Caerwin as she struggles to figure out if she loves Marcellus or if her reactions are just because he's shown her kindness and trained her body to respond to his the way it does. Caerwin and the Roman Dog gives a look into what it would be like to not only live in Roman times, but also what war brought and how women from defeated tribes were made slaves. The way Lizzie Ashworth blends the facts into her story is beautiful and makes it seem like Caerwin and Marcellus really did exist and that we got a glimpse into their lives. I will definitely be on the watch for more from Lizzie Ashworth as I need to know what happens next!
