Cain: A Curse to Spread, Book Two by H. L. Smith is a fascinating journey through the millennia as Cain inhabits the earth in a variety of guises, seeking redemption and understanding. When Cain slew his brother Abel at the start of humanity, he was cursed never to die but his spirit would interminably wander through time, in all manner of different “meat vessels” tormented by pain and loss. Not only will Cain experience deep relationships and familiar love, but he will constantly lose those connections through terrible tragedies and then start all over again. The secrets of heaven, hell, and the universe may be shown to Cain over time but only the relinquishment of ego can save him from this eternal torment. All he longs for is to rediscover his lost love, his “ember,” and finally be allowed the endless rest of death and eternity with her.
Cain truly is like no other book I have ever read. Because this is Book Two of a series, my first question is can this be read as a standalone novel? The answer is definitely yes. Although it wasn’t immediately apparent to me exactly who Cain was, author H. L. Smith does an excellent job of setting the scene and allowing readers to understand where the storyline has come from and is taking them. I particularly enjoyed Cain’s interactions with what could best be described as the servants of hell. I loved that each time Cain believed he had reached the necessary levels of humility and service to completely deny his ego, he would invariably be proven wrong and have to begin again. The author’s ability to vividly paint a scene, the use of colorfully descriptive language, and the fascinating characters and scenes Cain came across in his different earthly personas combined in a deeply intricate narrative and subtly sent a message to readers about what is important in life. I did appreciate the focus on the power of thought and its relationship to the universe and our everyday lives. One line stands out as the core philosophy of this novel: “Don’t let self rule you.” This story has many layers of meaning and understanding for different readers and that makes it stand out so vividly. I highly recommend this book.
