Darby Donati is a spoiled little rich girl, the daughter of a Las Vegas casino owner, or so she thinks. The discovery of three bodies - a man, a woman, and a child - in a dried-out section of Lake Mead rocks her world. Suddenly, people are after her and want her dead. She has no idea who these people are, or how they’re connected to her. What she learns is that she isn’t who everyone has told her she is. This spoiled little girl is actually part Navajo. The biggest problem for her is that she no longer knows who to trust. Can she accept who she is, reconnect with her real family, and escape the attempt on her life? Find out in Can Skinwalkers Swim? by Michael Wescott Loder.
There’s a lot to love about Can Skinwalkers Swim? It’s a mystery/thriller, but it’s also a coming-of-age story as Darcy is 16. Michael Wescott Loder has done extensive research on the Navajo people and their customs, and the book is partly an education on them, which is greatly appreciated. For those wanting to understand all the terms used in the book, there’s a complete appendix at the back. The contrast between the glitz of Las Vegas and the remote Navajo chapter of Pinon makes for a wonderful look at two completely different ways of life in two neighboring US states. The cast of supporting characters is amazing, from the kind FBI agent with a crush on one of Darby’s relatives to her best friend recovering from an attack that leaves her damaged. The book offers a roller-coaster ride of emotions from fear to suspense, anger, pain, heartache, and family love. I absolutely loved reading this book, and it will stay with me for a long time.
