Can You Do This? is a short interactive picture book that helps young children wind down at the end of the day. Written and illustrated by Megan Roy, the book has kids play a game to wind down. They act out prompts, fluffing up their pillows, tucking in their stuffed toys, and climbing under their blankets like sneaking into a cave. What follows are more interesting exercises, like curling up like a caterpillar in a blanket, lying on their bed like a pancake, and stretching their hands and legs like a starfish. Each movement calms their active minds. Near the end, they say goodnight to different parts of their body. Do you need a guidebook that you and your kids can use as a nightly routine?

Megan Roy’s writing is simple, warm, and clear. The lines are short, with a similar question format that is easy for children to follow. Using similes of things children naturally love, the book immediately grabs their attention, keeps them listening, and engages them. The playful prompts are children’s version of mindfulness techniques. For example, slow breathing is a mindfulness technique commonly used to reduce stress and calm the nervous system. In the book, the author teaches children to imagine they are blowing out the smoke from a hot chocolate. Another prompt instructs the children to wiggle their fingers and toes. This technique allows the body to release the tension it absorbed that day. At an early age, children can build healthy habits through play. For parents and carers with energetic toddlers and preschoolers, Can You Do This? is a great book to learn healthy bedtime rituals.
