Canter Cuisine: Shetland Soup by Chef Seff is about four friends, Daisy, Hazel, Iris, and Rose, who are at Culinary School learning how to cook. Their teacher is Chef Marigold. The characters show children how to work as a team, care for a sick friend, and perform a task together, even if they have a difference of opinion. Chef Marigold is a delight and allows the characters to gather their ingredients and start cooking, but she leaves them to work together to see how they do. Of course, there is always a problem that will rear its ugly head and cause dissension. The way Chef Marigold handles it is both simple and beautiful, making sure that no one feels stupid or silly. This in itself is an art and very much needed, as some people seem to take great glee in making a person, especially a child, feel stupid.
The drawings are excellent and delightful, highlighting that the characters are having fun making something healthy and nutritious. The actual recipe is included at the end of the story, which is unexpected but very welcome. The reader will find it a delight to try on a cold winter day to cheer their families up. Anyone reading the book will find it helpful in highlighting friendship, caring, and learning cooking skills. Canter Cuisine: Shetland Soup by Chef Seff is tremendous fun. Thank you for helping to teach children how to cook simple meals. Looking forward to finding more books by this author with simple recipes in them. A most insightful book. I really enjoyed reading this lovely story, and the soup was delicious!
