The Woulfe Intrusion by Tim Gallows introduces retired operative Azarias Woulfe, who promised to leave behind the life of an assassin after a devastating tragedy, but is dragged back into the shadows when his old friend Clay’s son, Noah, disappears from Switzerland. Noah is a cybersecurity prodigy who uncovers a terrifying secret: his employer, AlpenCore, is a Russian front developing a cyberweapon known as Project Gridlock, designed to plunge American cities into absolute darkness. He encrypts the weapon and flees with the biometric key. Now he is a target for a rogue diplomat, Russian handlers, a corrupt U.S. defense contractor, and the terrorist Sons of Numidia. Woulfe follows Noah’s trail across Europe, from Lucerne to the red-light district of Amsterdam. Can he evade Interpol, survive enemy fire, and reach Noah before someone else does while the countdown to a national disaster ticks even closer?
Woulfe, who is refreshingly flawed, is living with dyslexia and battling grief over his late partner, Tyler, while accumulating injuries. The pacing is relentless and driven by short, gripping chapters that rarely let up. Tim Gallows skillfully slows for moments of humor and human connection, such as Woulfe’s hesitation to kill the Russian Oleg, who has shown him kindness in the past, or his mentorship of the struggling artist, Brian. The Woulfe Intrusion is written in excellent prose, and the short sentences, coupled with quick paragraphs, make it a great read. The author deftly examines loyalty in the context of a chosen family in this captivating thriller, while critiquing state terror, corporate greed, and the cynical machinations of the military-industrial complex. The storytelling is cinematic: a blend of an irresistible first-person narrative voice and sharp, witty dialogue.
