Cat Dreaming by Stephanie Schorow is an engaging story set in June 1989. It opens with a gloriously chaotic scene: three friends, Elektra, Maureen, and Tina, sneak a cat into a hospital, desperate to use it to rouse their friend, Sarah, from a coma. The story shows how these four friends met, working at the Stamford Gazette, their passions, and their dreams of succeeding in the journalism world in the sexist 1980s. These women survive toxic romantic relationships and build a strong bond over “crane nights,” wine, and their feline companions. But when their friend Sarah suffers a painful breakup and struggles with depression, the friendship becomes her lifeline. Their friendship is tested in a way none of them could have imagined when Sarah crashes her car and slips into unconsciousness. Will they be able to make her wake up?

Stephanie Schorow’s characters may experience real emotional pain, but she has the wit, the imagination, and the perspective to make their stories hilarious and fun. These characters are distinct, relatable, and flawed, yet the things they share in common, like their love for cats, become an extension of a relationship and a delightful bond. Their character arcs are expertly accomplished: Tina grows from an insecure “fat girl” into a gifted, confident reporter; Maureen is the ambitious editor who conducts imagined dialogues with Jane Austen; and the exuberance of Elektra is contagious. One thing I loved about Cat Dreaming is that it delivers a perfect portrait of friendship, with friends who often fail each other, but never fail to show up when it matters. The sharp, situational humor makes the workplace sexism and mental health issues realistic for readers.
