Change in Plans: Know Your Enemy by Meagan Fink begins in the heat of action. It is set against the backdrop of the Second World War with a lot of bombings happening and danger always looming on the horizon. But for Tatiana and her brother Dyton, there is an even bigger enemy than the war; a more dangerous enemy because they don’t know who this enemy is. To find out who is after them, Tita must uncover secrets from her parents’ past. But when Luca arrives in their lives, Tita knows she will desperately need his help. But who is Luca? And is he the enemy they have been running from or an ally they will need?
Suspenseful and action-packed, Change in Plans: Know Your Enemy is a page-turner that captures an atmosphere of chaos with powerful imagery. Right from the very start of the novel, the reader gets glimpses of what it feels like to be in a war zone: “She awoke to the sound of screaming. Tita's eyes snapped open as the entire house shook, threatening to cave in on her. She jumped out of her bed and looked out her bedroom window. The sight was a nightmare.” Meagan Fink’s writing is beautiful, the prose fluid and filled with vivid descriptions and exciting dialogues. I enjoyed the way the characters are developed and the bond between Tatiana and her brother. The themes of family, war, and safety are brilliantly written into the story and the characters are real, each invested with a unique sense of humanity. This story is well-plotted and holds unexpected twists for readers.
