Armed with bravery and a desire for adventure, Regina Petra Meyer examined the prospect of traveling to faraway places to deal with a distressing restlessness that had been seething inside her for a long time. She accomplished exactly that and found a new love in the Caribbean, which prompted her to rethink and question her heart's desires. Regina soon found herself alone - physically and psychologically - in a foreign nation, where she had to start over while dealing with dishonest employers and complicated immigration procedures. Fortunately, each obstacle she overcame allowed her to mature as a person and taught her something new. In Change of Course: Sailing into Love and Adversity on Caribbean Shores, Meyer recalls her travels at sea, living in the Caribbean, working on her love life, and finding her place in the world during a pivotal point in her life.
This book is a treasure trove of good features. Although the spectacular descriptions of the stunning sea and the sumptuous, multi-million dollar super yachts are certainly captivating and exciting, the deeply meditative comments lend yet another level to the story's intricate layers. Regina Petra Meyer engages the reader by exposing her deepest thoughts and sentiments about personal matters such as feeling a genuine sense of belonging and being entirely accepted as a white woman in Antigua, which has a mostly black population. Change of Course was both entertaining and educational for me, mostly because it displays ideas that I feel we all ought to embrace as people, such as seeing new cultures and living in a different environment, refusing to accept bullies, appreciating the beauty of nature, and much more. It's the kind of book you'd be happy to have in your collection. Excellent work, Regina!
