In Kenneth Bossard’s Christian novel set in the 1970s, Cheryl's Song 1, a young woman’s journey to faith rocks her relationship with her current partner. Cheryl’s mother dies when she is five, and she is brought up by her alcoholic father. Her childhood is further marred by sexual and physical violence. In 1978, she is a college student dating Mike, the man she believes she will marry. She has found a sense of belonging in her relationship, friendships, and sorority. Cheryl meets Perry, who leads her to faith and encourages her in her new journey. She agrees to guide him through the pledging process in Mike’s fraternity as Perry pursues fraternity membership. Meanwhile, Mike finds Cheryl’s faith and friendship with Perry disconcerting and gives her an ultimatum.
Kenneth Bossard beautifully crafts a story about faith, friendship, and love. I appreciated that the main characters are flawed and believable. They are strong and overcome their painful backgrounds by finding community through their friendships. Mike and Cheryl’s relationship is imperfect and, hence, realistic. Still, a beautiful bond exists between them, and together they navigate their difficult pasts and current lives. The subplot involving Perry and his take on faith adds an intriguing twist to the main story. I found other twists in the novel captivating. The ending was unpredictable and dramatic. The first installment in the series, Cheryl's Song 1, is a compelling romance novel with fascinating plot twists and vivid characters. It includes unexpected scenes that you will enjoy.
