Chester and the Magic 8 Ball is a heartwarming children’s book written by Lynn Katz. Georgia is a twelve-year-old girl who believes in the magic and wisdom of her Magic 8 Ball. It is, after all, thanks to the Magic 8 Ball that she finally brings home Chester, a toothless Schnoodle, after nagging and begging her parents for years for a dog. Sadly, Chester’s introduction to the home seems to be the last straw for Georgia’s parents’ marriage, and Georgia and her mom are left to care for Chester alone. Being a tween is not easy and Georgia must try to come to terms with her parents’ break up and mean girls at school, but luckily she has Chester and the special trick he has up his sleeve. Chester seems to be able to tell the future with Georgia’s Magic 8 Ball and his skills even get put to the test in front of a few willing and astonished audiences. Can Chester actually tell the future? And if so, is it a future Georgia might want to hear?
I am completely under Chester’s spell. I loved reading about his sweet nature and his magical abilities. Lynn Katz has written an extraordinarily moving and uplifting story about growing up and love for your friends, family, and strangers. I am spellbound by the beautiful words written in Chester and the Magic 8 Ball and was pleasantly surprised and impressed by how grown up Georgia became toward the end of the book and how she saw the potential love she and Chester could show those around them. This is a wonderfully rewarding and encouraging book for any child to read as well as any adult looking to remind themselves of the beauty of life.
