Chico, by Cheryl Spears Waugh, is a story told in the first person from the standpoint of a young calf by that name. The book opens with Chico in trouble because he is an orphan. But he finds a home and becomes good friends with his owners, Will and Sophia. Life is good for the calf, but then he is sold off to two cowboys who drive him and the rest of their herd to Wyoming. Chico escapes after a stampede caused by a thunderstorm and heads back home. After a long, hard journey he arrives and is happily reunited with Will and Sophia. Waugh also illustrated the book, which is dedicated to an organization called ROCK (Ride On Center for Kids) and to BIG (Brookwood in Georgetown). Both organizations exist to help those who face challenges and or have disabilities.

I enjoyed reading Chico by Cheryl Spears Waugh. It’s a heartwarming story about love, contentment, and a longing for home. It’s also educational because the book emphasizes the culture of the southwestern part of the United States and contains several Hispanic words that English-speaking readers will learn as they read. I also liked that there's a glossary of the Hispanic words at the end of the book, and also a page that tells readers about Texas Longhorns. The author has mastered the technique of making readers care about her main character, Chico the calf, and then putting Chico into a troublesome situation. That will engage young readers and make them want to see how the story turns out. The full-page illustrations are beautiful and perfectly match the text. I recommend this fine book to children, their parents, and their grandparents.
