Children of Eternity by Macaulay Christian kicks off in a galaxy that’s still dealing with the aftermath of a mysterious signal that reached every planet at once. The signal came with instructions to build a device no one fully understands, but everyone feels compelled to complete. Different civilizations, some of them former enemies, come together to build it, even while political tensions and violence continue in the background. At the same time, Holindrian and his companions are dealing with something much bigger and stranger, including visions of ancient beings and events that stretch far beyond normal human history. When the device is finally activated, things don’t go as planned, and it becomes clear that whatever answered the signal might not be something anyone was ready for.

I ended up reading Children of Eternity by Macaulay Christian pretty slowly, and honestly, I think that worked in its favor. It’s not the kind of book you fly through—it’s dense in places, and a lot is going on, especially early on. I’ll admit, the beginning threw me off a bit with how abstract and intense it felt, but once I settled into the writing style, I started to really appreciate it. I liked that the story doesn’t spoon-feed you everything; it expects you to keep up with the ideas. The characters didn’t immediately click for me, but gradually, I started to connect with them more, especially through the pressure they’re under and the choices they have to make. There were moments where the pacing slowed, but it felt intentional, as if the author wanted you to really think about what was happening instead of just moving on to the next big event. By the end, I didn’t feel like everything was neatly wrapped up, but I want to see where it goes next. If you’re into big, thoughtful sci-fi with a lot of depth, this book is worth sticking with.
