Christopher Dragon Goes to the Beach is Book Three in Mary Kagan Draper's children's first fantasy series, The Tales of Christopher Dragon. It's illustrated by Patti Brassard Jefferson. Christopher is a dragon who once lived in a time and place when there were castles and knights and kings, but now he lives in the modern world. He and his friends are taking a trip to the beach, which is a marvelous new experience for the dragon. They collect seashells, play volleyball, snorkel under the waves and build sandcastles. When Christopher and his friends are playing in the water, he sees an overturned boat with people trying to stay above the water. Christopher swims out and saves them. Later, the companions have a barbecue, and Christopher tells them stories from his past life in times of old.
Mary Kagan Draper's children's first fantasy series, The Tales of Christopher Dragon, shows kids how being different and having diverse backgrounds is in no way a deterrent to making friends and enjoying new experiences. Christopher Dragon Goes to the Beach shows Christopher and his friends having fun at the beach. Patti Brassard Jefferson's illustrations made me wish I were there at the beach, enjoying the surf and sand. Each painted panel is bold and brightly colored, and I couldn't resist Draper's challenge to find the dragon scale in each picture. Draper's rhyming verse is easy and fun, and the words she uses are simple and direct enough for young readers to practice on their own, but this volume is also a grand picture book for story hour or bedtime. I love Draper's Christopher Dragon series. They celebrate diversity and show kids that being different is really rather cool. Christopher Dragon Goes to the Beach: The Tales of Christopher Dragon, Book 3 is most highly recommended.
