Clara Thorn: The Witch That Was Found is a work of fiction in the fantasy and adventure subgenres. The work is intended for the young adult reading audience and was penned by author Don Jones. In this highly engaging and truly magical series-opener, we find ourselves following protagonist Clara Thorn on a journey of self-discovery. At school, Clara finds herself bullied and alone despite her academic successes, but a chance meander leads her to discover that there’s literally another world beyond the Border: the land of Underhill. Here, magic is precious, and one rogue exile wants to put a stop to it all unless Clara can find a way to stop them first.

Author Don Jones has crafted a beautifully diverse and emotionally intelligent work that perfectly combines adventure with teen angst, uncertainty, and coping with growing up. Clara Thorn is a likable central figure in this adventure, with as many vulnerabilities as she has talents, and it was wonderful to see her puzzling out relationships with new friends as well as the many magical and mathematical challenges that the plot throws at her. The story moves well and always keeps readers guessing, making it ideal for YA readers and the upper end of middle grade. The plot threads are revealed in a really slow-burning way so that the end is satisfying and logical, but also a complete surprise. Overall, I would highly recommend Clara Thorn: The Witch That Was Found and I can’t wait to see what comes next in this truly thrilling new series.

Highly recommended!
I enjoyed this book, which I got for free to review. It was a pity that it suddenly ended, while there were still more than 20 pages to read. The subject, a witch who has to discover her powers, really appeals to me.
