Clayton the Energetic Cow by Daniel Green is the delightful tale of a cow who uses his love of running to compete in an epic race. Clayton isn’t your typical cow. He doesn’t spend his days lazing about the field, grazing on grass. He is always running! He even chases after rabbits. The farmer and his wife offer him endless love and support as he runs around the fields. So much so that the farmer's wife gives him a gift of red sneakers. Clayton is so excited to try out the shoes that he decides to use them to compete in a triathlon against the other cows. But will he have enough energy to swim, bike, and even sprint his way to the finish line?
The short sentences and easy rhymes make it easy for youngsters not only to read but also to learn in a way that’s engaging and fun. Humorous illustrations by Mark Balita capture his attitude well. Daniel Green creates a world around this character that is light and joyful, which are feelings derived from simply running. This sends a lovely message to young readers to find happiness in the smallest things and reinforces the idea that being energetic is empowering. The story has a quirkiness to it, with the farmer’s wife giving him red shoes that he uses when he enters the triathlon. Young readers will enjoy everything about this story, from the charming rhymes to the adorable cow in sneakers. Clayton the Entergetic Cow is a playful and whimsical tale of a cow who loves to run and how this joy enables him to compete in a triathlon.
