Clemente and Bastian: An Exploration Without Radar by Estela Solis Torneria is a delightful story about an adventurous squirrel named Clemente and his friend Bastian, a shy boy in a wheelchair. Together, they set out on an imaginative journey in a makeshift ship, searching for the legendary chocolate flower. Along the way, they face unexpected challenges, including a storm that throws them off course and into a magical world filled with surprises. Their journey is full of wonder, courage, and teamwork as they explore an uncharted world, learning to adapt and embrace the unexpected.

Clemente and Bastian is simple enough for children to follow, but it’s packed with excitement and heartwarming moments. The pacing is just right, balancing quieter, thoughtful moments with bursts of action, like the storm and their crash landing into a honeycomb. The friendship is beautifully portrayed—Clemente’s adventurous spirit complements Bastian’s hesitance, making them dynamic, relatable, and inspiring. The themes of bravery, inclusivity, and finding joy in unexpected discoveries are woven seamlessly into the story. The rhyming verses add a playful element and make the story engaging. Estela Solis Torneria's writing and Carola Vegara's illustrations also convey a sense of wonder and magic, helping to bring the story to life. The descriptions of the journey and the setting are vivid, particularly the garden of flowers at the end. I loved how the magical garden and chocolate flower added a sense of wonder, and the vibrant descriptions made the story feel alive. A charming tale that encourages imagination, resilience, and friendship, making it a great pick for young readers.
