Colin the crab is always busy. All his friends living in the sea seek his help on construction projects. In Tuula Pere’s Colin the Crab Feels Tired, Colin is asked to help the fish family build a new house after their old one was destroyed. Then Sally the starfish and Eddie the eel make their requests. When someone works hard to help others, they sometimes get burnt out. That’s what happens to Colin. He’s so tired from all his construction projects and requests, that he can’t take it anymore. He curls up in bed for a good night’s sleep and ends up sleeping most the following day. His friends are worried, but they also realize that perhaps they’ve asked too much of Colin and so they pitch in and help finish the fish house. It’s always good when a community works hard together.
Tuula Pere’s picture book, Colin the Crab Feels Tired, is a Colin the Crab mini-story for 3-6-year-old readers. The plot follows Colin as he works hard to help others in his community. Everyone seeks his help, but there’s only so much Colin can do on his own. The narrative is simple for young readers to easily follow and the dialogue is well constructed and used effectively. The illustrations by Roksolana Panchyshyn are superb and help move the story along. This is a great story to teach young readers the value of being a helper as well as working together as a community and with friends.
