Colin the Crab Finds a Treasure, written by Tuula Pere and illustrated by Roksolana Panchyshyn, is a compelling tale about the true value of friendship, kindness, and humility. The story revolves around Colin, a modest and hardworking crab who does not indulge in expensive items. He continues to use his old tools, lives in a simple house, and treasures the belongings his grandparents left him. Colin's lifestyle baffles other residents of the bay, such as Eddie the Eel and Larry the Lobster, who enjoy flaunting their flashy possessions in an attempt to impress their friends. As the story progresses, Colin grapples with feelings of inadequacy and the desire for a more exciting life. However, after helping a new friend, Priscilla the Pearl Oyster, he realizes that true treasure lies not in material belongings but in meaningful connections and the joy of helping others.
Colin the Crab Finds a Treasure is a touching story that imparts profound lessons on the importance of friendship and the intrinsic value of kindness over material wealth. Many people today believe that having wealth and flashy possessions attracts friends and equates to true happiness. Unfortunately, this mindset often leads to superficial relationships and a lack of genuine connection. By teaching children to value kindness, humility, and meaningful relationships—just as Colin does—we can help them appreciate the true treasures in life. Children will love the colorful illustrations that enhance the ocean setting. Small details beautifully represent the sea theme and bring the narration to life. Overall, this is a must-read that offers vital life lessons to young readers.
