Complicit (A Legacy of Silence Book 1) by Amy Rivers is an excellent suspense thriller. After her mother’s tragic death, Kate Medina moved back to her family’s home in Alamogordo to care for her father. Kate was now a counselor at the same school she attended almost twenty years ago. The mangled body of a student that Kate was seeing was found in a creek. Kate’s friend from years ago, Detective Roman Aguilar, wanted to know whether she suspected that the murder was gang-related. This killing reminded Kate and Roman of the murder of a teenager seventeen years ago, whose body they found in a burned-out car in the creek. A student came to Kate for help after she was beaten and raped and told Kate about a sex-trafficking ring. Kate and Roman join forces to investigate, and their lives are put in danger.
Complicit by Amy Rivers is complicated and exciting. The sensitive topic of sex trafficking was handled with great skill and empathy. The story was fast-paced and full of action. The suspense of someone stalking Kate kept me on the edge of my seat. It was a page-turner, and I could not put it down. The characters were authentic and relatable. My favorite was Kate. She did not hesitate to give up her job to take care of her father, and she paid attention to her clients' problems. Kate and Tilly's relationship was very rocky, and there was more to Tilly's refusal to return than met the eye. The story was brilliantly written, and the ending was fitting.
