Cornero's Gold is a crime sleuth mystery novel by Larry O'Brien. It's 1974. When Kit O'Banion, a private investigator, is called upon by his father, who runs a private investigative agency out of Pasadena, to deliver an envelope to a man named R. Riccota, his seemingly routine assignment spirals out of control after he ends up killing a certain Lester Sloan in self-defense. As Kit delves into the investigation, he learns about a thirty-five-year-old robbery of a million dollars worth of gold. Alongside his childhood friend-turned-sweetheart Jaquie, Kit and his family must save a desperate couple from a loan shark and follow the trail of the gold to San Nicolas Island, where a former felon will confront his brother, a Las Vegas mobster. Additionally, they will have to explain Lester Sloan's killing to the authorities.
A crime caper with a healthy dose of family drama, romance, and action, Cornero's Gold is just the book for you to spend a cozy evening with. Larry O'Brien weaves a gripping tale with an engaging plot full of curveballs that take you by surprise at regular intervals. O'Brien takes his time to set up the characters and the story, using slice-of-life scenes to flesh out the characters and build intrigue through character interactions and dialogue. I was pleasantly surprised by the generous sprinkling of humor throughout the pages, and it keeps you entertained all the way through. Liam O'Brien's beautifully drawn illustrations add a nice touch and enhance the reading experience. To put it simply, if you're a fan of sleuth mysteries or crime drama thrillers, you'll love Cornero's Gold.
