Countdown is the first book in The Mirrin Bank Trilogy by Johan Ottosen. The story begins when journalist Kurt Østergaard’s stepfather dies, leaving behind mysterious clues tied to a devastating secret buried deep within Denmark’s history. Kurt’s search for answers collides with the work of Søren Storm, a former UN weapons inspector wrestling with ghosts from his past. The stakes rise dramatically when stolen radioactive material and a looming terrorist attack surface. To raise the stakes higher, Storm’s pregnant girlfriend, Birgitte, and her powerful mother, Bodil, are thrown into the chaos of this conspiracy. What they uncover ties modern-day corruption and violence to ancient prophecies and hidden knowledge that could alter the course of world history forever. The group must race against time to prevent a catastrophic act of terror in Copenhagen. Will they succeed? Or will the group become a victim as well?
Author Johan Ottosen ensured that his readers were invested in the story from the beginning. The story was perfect in every way. The pace was fast, the characters were fully developed, and the story was brilliant. I loved how all the characters were complex and layered. None of them was perfect, but each of them had a story to tell. I enjoyed their struggles and how each of them had to prove themselves to the reader. I loved the character development, the twists and turns, and how entertaining it was. Countdown is highly recommended!
The audiobook is narrated by Jeffrey Machado, who made the whole audio experience incredible. I enjoyed the cadence of his narration and the way he brought the story to life. I could feel every emotion Kurt and Søren were going through. I could feel their desperation and the way they handled such dire situations. I was hooked, and if I could, I would have listened to the story all day.
