Geoff Boxer, a professional tracker, could have been content with his simple and laid back lifestyle, tracking criminals and lost persons with his dog and “constant companion for the past six years,” Gator, in the Punta Gorda, Florida area. Geoff seems to know every creek and cranny in the rough and wild environment. But things are going to change for Geoff and take a tumultuous turn when Maria Sanchez, a wildlife biologist, starts an investigation into the disappearance of wildlife in the area. Crying Moon by Liam McMillan reads both like a thriller and an adventure, a story that will appeal immensely to pet lovers and fans of fast-paced and gritty stories.
Crying Moon is a wonderful read and the language is impeccable. I was hooked from the very beginning with Liam McMillan’s writing, which joyfully captures elements of the setting with vivid details while introducing the key actors in the story. “In the early morning hours the air is warm and heavy with the ever-present humidity, but there is something very peaceful and serene about it.” The writing feels wonderful, sweet like honey, and it gives readers wonderful images. The plot is well-imagined and executed with the touch of a master’s pen. I just couldn’t stop reading. But then the characters are wonderful, too, and I enjoyed the way the conflict is developed. It’s huge. Geoff Boxer is a character through whom a lot about wildlife in Florida is revealed. It was thrilling reading this book and I would recommend it to anyone looking for a complex story with a stunning setting and sophisticated characters.
