In Crystal and the Shield Maidens by Ron Albury, Crystal is an eleven-year-old girl from Florida who loves exploring and discovering new things. She can't wait to go with her parents on the next expedition to recover artifacts from a fifteen-hundred-year-old Viking longboat at the bottom of a Swedish fjord. However, she soon learns that her older brother will be going on the expedition, and she will attend a strange Swedish camp instead. Once at Camp Gladsheim, Crystal isn't impressed at first. Yet she begins to believe that she will gain something from this experience. However, she discovers that she must win a competition to keep her spot in the best cabin, as thirty girls in the camp want her place, some of whom are really mean, and that there is also something mysterious going on. Is this an ordinary camp? Is she an ordinary girl, or is she about to risk her life helping the Norse gods defend the world?
