Zoey is a lively young girl, full of joy and energy. She also has a head full of curly hair “that danced in the wind like a field of wildflowers.” Now, how poignant is that? And Lachandra M Robinson has more clever words of wisdom to share in her book, Curls of Joy, especially when Zoey meets another little girl with hair as wild and curly as hers and proclaims to Zoey that “curly hair is the best.” It’s not surprising that the two girls become best friends and share their adventures, including adventures with their wild and curly hair.
Lachandra M Robinson’s picture book, Curls of Joy, is a simple story about diversity and feeling good about yourself. This clever little story is told in simple language so young readers can easily follow along and improve their reading skills. The illustrations are bright, bold, colorful, and full of the energy that one would expect of a head full of thick, curly hair. This is a beautiful story on its own, but the author’s mastery of language makes it even more special. I particularly loved the use of similes and metaphors when describing the curly hair. The story will definitely build the confidence of young readers as they learn to accept their own uniquely different qualities and find joy in who they are. This book is also a great story about the strong bonds of friendship. Accepting ourselves and bonding in friendship – that’s where one can find true happiness. Loved it!
