Few other pet species share our lives as intimately as dogs do. They can be trained to perform a huge variety of roles. But in exchange for their loyalty and devotion, we owe them compassionate care through each stage of life. This means not only providing necessities such as food and shelter, but also understanding deeper needs such as disease prevention or, failing that, timely intervention. In D is for Dog, Dr. Terrie Sizemore equips owners with a veterinarian's insights. She offers tips and advice in an easily digestible format on topics ranging from preparing for puppies to managing the well-being of an aging dog, at the same time covering just about anything that could go wrong in between. For instance, you will learn all about how the unwelcome viral baggage from ticks affects your canine best buddy, with a useful round-up of different culprit species and which diseases they are associated with.

As with the two other books in the series, Dr. Terrie Sizemore's D is for Dog has an easy-to-read formula that offers information in bite-sized chunks with plenty of visual media in between. That certainly helps readers to make sense of the necessary medical explanations. You get an inside look at what those all-important blood tests really indicate and a job description for several key organs. But it's not all disease and disaster management. The chapter on diet includes five yummy recipes for nutritious, low-calorie treats. There are so many readers who can potentially benefit from the subject matter. The book is first and foremost an excellent guide for dog owners in guarding the health of their best friend. Would-be fosters and animal rescuers will also find invaluable information that can help save the lives of dogs and puppies at risk. Anyone working with dogs, for example, in a training capacity for law enforcement or the military, will also be empowered to take swift action when needed. It goes without saying that teens considering a career in veterinary science or research will find this a good foundation to ease them into a more formal study of the topic.
