Eduardo Valdés Escoffery’s The Children of the Fourth Dimension: The Legacy of Saint Germain follows Dr Max Murphy, an American economist with the International Red Cross in Geneva, after intelligence officers discover every official memory of his extraordinary mental abilities has disappeared. Max shares those abilities with Dr Jigme Mangyal, an English psychiatrist whose gift lets him enter another person’s mind. Together, the two friends can reach a fourth-dimensional corridor across time. Their attempt to keep Max’s old “4D” intelligence file buried takes on greater importance when British intelligence starts asking questions about the vanished Soviet case. Max begins applying his abilities during humanitarian assignments where thousands of civilians may depend on what he can do. As scrutiny returns, Max and Jigme must decide how far their gifts can go while protecting the people closest to them.
Eduardo Valdés Escoffery’s The Children of the Fourth Dimension is an incredible speculative adventure. Escoffery has a gift for bringing huge ideas into ordinary conversation, so even the wildest possibility feels completely at home with these characters. That comes through beautifully in Somalia, where Max’s poker game with a militia general turns a humanitarian negotiation into a scene with real flair. The friendships have that same easy quality, giving the book plenty of heart around its science-fiction ideas. Escoffery’s medical imagination shines when Jigme enters Coral’s mind, pictured as a rainforest whose living pathways make psychiatry feel like another realm entirely. It is such a cool concept, delivered with total commitment. Readers who enjoy speculative fiction with historical mysteries alongside ambitious science fiction ideas are in for a real treat. Very highly recommended.
