Dad On Wheels is a children's social issues picture book written by Leslie A. Johnson and illustrated by Dasguptarts. The author was in a car accident when he was sixteen years old and was paralyzed from the neck down. In this story of a dad who rides in a wheelchair, Johnson shares his experiences with readers. The dad always has his son riding along with him when they go shopping. His son stands on the back of the wheelchair so they're always travelling together. They enjoy going into town that way, and his son hops off the chair to open the door for his dad when they go into stores. One day, his son asks why he's in that wheelchair. His dad has to think a bit to figure out the right way to tell his son about the car accident and how it damaged his legs. His son's upset by this. He doesn't really know how to process the information, but dad reassures him. It's all okay because the two of them are together -- that's what really matters most.
Leslie A. Johnson's children's social issues book, Dad On Wheels, introduces a subject most kids are a bit scared to ask about. Most kids and, regrettably, many adults as well are reluctant to deal with people in wheelchairs. They don't really know how to behave in such a situation, and the person in the wheelchair may seem a bit scary and different. Johnson's dad and his son get on fine, but even his son has some of the questions that kids have about disabilities. And by talking it out, the two become even closer as father and son, and friends. I loved the way Johnson approaches his topic and makes it something kids can talk about without feeling afraid or shy. Dad On Wheels has brilliantly colored and upbeat illustrations which highlight the things the dad and son can do together, and the final picture showing the magnificent surroundings where they live puts it all in perspective. Dad On Wheels is most highly recommended.
