James Seamone brings readers a captivating collection of short horror stories by Canadian authors with Dark Canadiana. In late nineteenth-century Alberta, a constable traverses the treacherous countryside to rescue a young woman trapped in the devil's clutches. A young man and his crush go out on what they hope to be a fun, monster-hunting session, but the Southern Ontario cryptids turn out to be too real for their taste. A young man is excited to start his new job in Montreal; however, cleaning up his new apartment might be too much of a risk. After their school trip to a maple tree farm, twin siblings discover the secret ingredient in the syrup produced there. Tired of being tormented by his bullies, the new boy in school devises a plan to get his revenge.
For me, Dark Canadiana was a diverse collection of tales that should please any horror aficionado. All the Canadian authors who have contributed to this anthology leave their mark with their own style and tone. Despite overall being the same genre, every story has a unique atmosphere and setting. I think editor and author James Seamone has done a fantastic job of collecting these narratives and presenting them in this book. From the fantastical to suspense-filled slashers, stories about monsters and dark voids, to serial killers, this collection covers almost every type of horror subgenre in contemporary fiction today. I devoured every single one of these stories with great pleasure. I honestly can't pick a favorite. Horror fans should definitely not miss out on this anthology.
