Dead Man Dancing: A Handbook Of Stroke Survival & Recovery is a work of non-fiction focusing on medical and personal issues. It is intended for the general reading audience and was penned by author D. C. Roberts about his own experiences following a totally debilitating stroke. In a lonely world locked inside his own body when it suddenly ceased to perform even basic functions, Roberts went through a myriad of emotions, fearful of what kind of life the future had in store for him after his stroke. The book follows his recovery process, both mental and physical, to restore function and purpose to his life to the best of his abilities.

The immediate impression upon finishing this book is to be overwhelmed by the sheer grit and determination of author D. C. Roberts, who was handed such a terrible lot and dealt with it with honesty, dignity, and powerful strength of character. I truly believe that other stroke survivors and relatives of those who are recovering, no matter what stage they’re at in their own journey, will find so much to resonate with in this brutally honest and accurate account of what it’s like to resent your own body, but push forward anyway. There’s a really well-constructed balance of guidance versus autobiographical experience, and a sharp sense of humor that adds levity to some of the more harrowing moments. Overall, you’d struggle to find a better book on stroke survival than Dead Man Dancing, and I’d highly recommend it to those who need it.
