Deadpan by Harold Eppley offers readers a glimpse into the life of Jackson, a 12-year-old boy navigating the challenges of middle school, family dynamics, and living with Moebius Syndrome. Written in free verse, the story captures the raw emotions and experiences of a young boy who struggles with facial paralysis, a condition that makes it difficult for him to express himself. Jackson uses his wit and love of jokes to connect with others and find his place in the world. The book explores themes of friendship, identity, and acceptance as Jackson learns to embrace his differences and stand up to bullying. The arrival of his estranged father, a professional comedian, is a subplot that helps Jackson begin to understand the complexities of family relationships and the importance of forgiveness.

Harold Eppley's writing style is engaging and creative. The inclusion of jokes and puzzles throughout the book adds a playful element, making it an enjoyable read for young audiences. The story also touches on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, adding a contemporary backdrop to Jackson's journey. The characters are well-developed and memorable, from Jackson's supportive best friend, Ethan, to the kind and understanding Pangfua, who becomes a source of comfort and inspiration for Jackson. The book also sheds light on the challenges faced by individuals with Moebius Syndrome, offering an important perspective on empathy and understanding. Deadpan is a touching and uplifting story that highlights the importance of humor, friendship, and self-acceptance. It will leave readers rooting for Jackson as he navigates life's ups and downs with courage and humor. Eppley's narrative is both entertaining and thought-provoking, making Deadpan an excellent addition to children's literature.
