In To Die For by Audrey Steidl, Dei Fields immediately decides that Mika St. John is the boy she must have when he walks into class at McKinley High School. Mika is already dating someone, but that hardly matters to Dei. Mika has grown up surrounded by close family friends, but for Dei, those relationships are just obstacles standing in her way. Dei is determined to be with Mika, and deliberately undermines his existing relationships. Dei wants to isolate Mika from his own family and persuade her parents to let him move into their home with her. What begins as an intense teenage attraction develops into something far more troubling. Dei does not accept boundaries or rejection. Mika is forced to decide whether to bend to her demands or find the courage to tell her no.
To Die For by Audrey Steidl is fast-paced with non-stop action to the end. There was so much happening that I could not put the book down. The suspense had me turning the pages as fast as I could. I had to find out what would come of the relationship between Dei and Mika. Dei’s character was unsettling because of what she was prepared to do to get her own way. Mika was caught between being loyal to his family and his attraction to Dei. The dark elements were at times overwhelming, but knowing where Dei comes from made it easier to understand. The book was excellently written and held my attention throughout. This book gave me insight into what is happening to people going through emotional and/or physical abuse. An enjoyable and very educational book.
