A long time ago, Eris was the closest thing to a superhero. That was until terrorists injured her and killed her husband. She went berserk, destroying everything before disappearing. Over a hundred years have passed since those dark days, but Eris is still around. She keeps a low profile, taking care of her cat Jack and occasionally spending time with the only person she trusts enough to call a friend, Al. When a new assignment from an old acquaintance comes up, Eris accepts. But when bodies start piling up and she uncovers a conspiracy involving a paranoid painter, the unique soldier with a gift worth killing for knows she must once again choose sides or face devastating consequences in Margaret A. Treiber's Death Engine Protocol.
Margaret A. Treiber's Death Engine Protocol features witty dialogue layered with disturbing dark humor. Readers gradually uncover Eris's intriguing origin story through a mix of flashbacks and indirect references that catch the eye and motivate perceptive readers to figure out why the technologically augmented former soldier sometimes seems antisocial. Treiber depicts a futuristic Earth that emphasizes the negative impact of greenhouse gases' effects on the atmosphere, ultimately creating a believable apocalyptic scenario that readers can relate to. Vivid combat scenes with blow-by-blow commentary immerse readers whenever Eris engages with her adversaries. Romance fans will enjoy seeing Eris and Al navigate boundaries as their relationship shifts from platonic to romantic. Science fiction purists will appreciate the blend of augmented individuals, AI programming, and references to the colonization of other planets. Treiber weaves these elements together to create a remarkably riveting novel that I thoroughly enjoyed.
