As the owner of the Windermere Hotel on St. Mary’s, Geraldine has a busy life, full of daily challenges. Her marriage seems to be falling apart, and she will soon be alone because her three children will all be away at school. Then there is the new problem of someone stealing pounds of fish from her restaurant. She has also just learned that the daughter she bore as a teenager and gave up has reached out and wants to reconnect. In Death in the Scillies by Paula Welch, Geraldine faces additional challenges, more dire than she ever thought. Her mother has been assaulted, and her husband has been murdered. Sofia Faraday, Chief Inspector at Scotland Yard, and Harry, a forensic pathologist in London, are on a romantic weekend at Geraldine’s hotel just in time to take over the investigation into her mother’s attack and her husband’s murder. Are the two circumstances linked?
Paula Welch packs Death in the Scillies with fascinating characters and a complex plot. The structure reminded me of an Agatha Christie mystery: several well-developed characters, each with a complicated backstory that suggests any one of them could be the murderer. St. Mary’s is described in charming detail: a lovely yet isolated location, the perfect background for mysterious activities. The author uses the police interview technique very effectively, revealing relevant specific details and suggesting several motives and opportunities. This keeps the plot moving at a brisk pace. Like every good mystery, the twists keep coming. Mystery lovers will enjoy this book.
