Set during the American Revolutionary War, Desperate Hope is a historical fiction romance novel by Susan Leigh Furlong. After his close friend and fellow Continental soldier, Alden Carter, succumbs to his injuries, Galvin Cullane vows to fight for freedom at all costs. He seemingly maneuvers British Colonel Simon Duffy into making him a spy for the British troops. Galvin arrives in New York and meets Alden's beautiful widow, Tansy, and her family and quickly discovers that they were sending coded messages to George Washington on behalf of the Continental Army. Realizing Tansy's entire family is in danger, Galvin is in a race against time to get them out of New York. Galvin must soon gain their trust, which becomes further complicated when Tansy's nephew is arrested for treason. With Duffy on their heels, will they ever find their freedom?

A seamless blend of romance, suspense, and unexpected plot twists and turns make Desperate Hope a delicious treat for historical fiction lovers. Interweaving actual historical events and personages into the narrative, author Susan Leigh Furlong tells a captivating love story set against the backdrop of the American Revolutionary War. With vivid and dynamic characters and a fast-moving plot, I found it hard to put the book down and finished reading it in one sitting. Gavin and Tansy's romance drives the narrative forward, but secondary characters like Nate, Charles, and Daisy also make their mark. Overall, I very much enjoyed Desperate Hope, and think fans of historical fiction and romance will have a blast with this one.
