If you're looking for an easy read in the suspense novel category, you might try picking up a copy of Devil Eye by Rebecca Downey. The author presents a spunky character in Penny Larkin, a strong woman who is gifted with remote viewing abilities. Penny initially sets off to help the U.S. Marshal by tracking young Juan Rico, a man who is suspected of gun trafficking. But Penny gets far more than she bargained for when she gets stranded on the interstate during a dust storm and ends up being arrested for murder. Penny desperately needs help from her boyfriend, El Paso Sheriff Leo Tellez but she is sworn to secrecy about her undercover mission. While Penny is struggling in a jail cell, Tellez is busy with an event of his own; he is trying to fight off the charms of his deceased wife's twin sister.

Author Downey beautifully develops her characters. They all seem like ordinary people committed to doing the right thing. As a twist, even one of the bad guys turns the tables on his comrades when given the chance. One of the things that really struck me was the way in which the author made the reader aware of an ongoing and deadly problem that plagues law enforcement dealing with the US-Mexican border. There is no judgment, rather a good presentation of the facts. Devil Eye has a lot to offer the reader in its vivid geographical scenes, its tough characters and a plot which will keep you guessing.
