Author Biography

I live and write in the Indianapolis area. After earning a PhD in Computer Science in 2002 and teaching and researching for seven years, I’ve returned to the childhood dream of becoming an author. I better do it now because I won’t get a third life.

Behind me, I have a ton of academic experience and have written about twenty extremely boring papers on query languages and such, for example one in the ACM Transactions on Databases. (That’s a mouthful.)

Now, I write in the mystery/thriller/suspense genres and sometimes science fiction. I know for some people databases would be the more beloved of the options, but for me, I finally realized that my heart wasn’t in it. So I took up a second life, as a self-published fiction author.

Online, I do the Writer Cy cartoon series about the (mis)adventures of researching, writing, and self-publishing in today’s shifting climate.

Dimorphic by Cy Wyss is an action-packed, thrilling ride with a heroine who does not take any sass, but has plenty to offer to the world. And believe me, she has a lot of sass to dish out. Before I jump into the actual review, let me tell you this: Judith is the BOMB! She is bad-ass and she knows it! The novel itself was great. It was fast paced, filled with some pretty awesome Parkour tricks that will make you say “awesome” and pretty amazing dialogues that will have you smiling and even laughing out loud. The lead character Judith is an enigma. She is very special, she has a power that makes her unique. When she sleeps, she can take over Ethan’s body.

Being the cool person she is, she decides to make the world a better place and feels that Ethan’s body is the best cover a superhero can have. However, things are not as easy as she thought. It is all well and good when you have a cool body and a lot of strength, but this means you have a lot of trouble too. Take the Chinese mafia for example; they want her dead and there is a certain FBI agent whom she is sure loves her. Life as a superhero is not easy. The novel reminded me a lot of Kickass, but it was 100 times better. I would say it had some features of a comic book, but it just adds to the quirky coolness of this novel. Cy Wyss is definitely a gem of a writer!

In an extremely fun, adventurous and thrill filled new novel by author Cy Wyss, Dimorphic will suck readers in from the very first page and keep them obsessively turning the pages until the very end in order to find out what happens. Follow our protagonist, Judith, a young woman with a unique ability. She's able to inhabit the body of her twin brother, Ethan, while she sleeps. Judith has a strong desire to make the world a better place, and she's certain that this 'Superpower' will enable her to do just that. Followed by a couple of highly unique sidekicks, Judith traverses the underbelly of Atlanta, ready to fight crime, but hoping not to get injured, or worse, along the way.

I so enjoyed Dimorphic. This book was one word. Fun! It is very fast paced and hooked me from the very start. I love a story with a strong female protagonist, and I definitely got this in Judith. Paired with an ability that I've never seen before in superheroes, this book was creative and interesting. Author Cy Wyss has done a great job in writing a book that is easy to engage with, unique and, although not possible, still seems very realistic. His writing abilities truly shine forth in this regard. Any reader who loves fiction that features action, adventure, thrills, a bit of science fiction and fantasy, and a whole lot of humor should definitely read Dimorphic. I highly recommend this book, and hope that author Cy Wyss is hard at work on another installment as I write!

Dimorphic is a science fiction superhero novel by author Cy Wyss, with young adult protagonists but a further reading audience. Our central heroine is the clumsy and rather inept Judith, a comic book fan dreaming of greater things for herself in the big city. Her twin, star athlete Ethan, is motionless in a coma, and Judith soon discovers that her mental connection to him stretches beyond that of the usual twin bond. As the novel’s title suggests, Judith soon discovers that she has the power to take over Ethan’s body at night, and soon she begins to use his free-running skills to smash through the city fighting crime. All manner of wacky mobsters, agents and suspicious folk soon pop out of the woodwork for Judith to face.

Cy Wyss’ depictions of the many action scenes in Dimorphic were superbly dynamic, creating perfectly painted images of comic book style violence, pithy put-downs and figures stealing away into the night. Fans of classic superheroes like Batman are sure to love Dimorphic’s dark yet oddly humorous take on the world of crime, along with its fast moving plot and transient cast of city dwellers getting involved in the fun. For me, only character development was lacking to make this a five star read, as I felt Judith didn’t have much below the surface when she wasn’t fighting crime. However, if you’re the type of reader who prizes non-stop action and a twisting, surprising plot line, then you’re sure to find Dimorphic a superb read.

In October, Judith lost her twin brother Ethan, a person whom she'd looked up to for all of her life. When he was pronounced brain dead by the neurologist, Judith couldn't believe it at first and denied that he was actually dead. However, after a dream about Satan, she found out that she could possess Ethan's body, transitioning his and her own.

Dimorphic by Cy Wyss is a very interesting, gripping, and emotional book and provides an amazing story. Judith is a realistic character (albeit a bit annoying) and her narratives are so heart wrenching. I can see that she cannot handle death really well, which is a normal and natural reaction. The story is also beautifully written, full of detail and emotion and has a lot of character. The plot really develops well, making it a very slow transition from one plot point to another. This allows for a logical flow, which is something I like a lot. I do love how mysterious, suspenseful and crazy this novel is, and all of these aspects combined make for an awesome story.

Judith is thoroughly shaken by her twin brother’s untimely death. She becomes even more distressed when she thinks she is dreaming about him, only to discover that she has taken over his body in Dimorphic by Cy Wyss. Ethan leaves the hospital and is drawn through suburban Atlanta by some cosmic coincidence to the shop of a comics/weapons dealer. Left unconscious after an altercation with the midget who runs the store and the seeming giant who lives in a bungalow behind it, Ethan has to be rescued by his sister and her crazy best friend, Blaze, who believes in vampires. Judith thinks this arrangement of sharing Ethan’s body is the perfect way to become a super hero and enlists the aid of Goom, the midget, and Jack, the martial artist, to teach her. They find their way into all kinds of trouble with stolen military secrets, the Chinese gang, and some murderous Russians, and end up not being sure if their legal guardian, a gung-ho FBI agent, is for or against them. Will they stay alive long enough to get to the bottom of the espionage ring or will the job of super hero prove to be too much for the dimorphic duo?

This unique blend of characters and straightforward story telling makes Dimorphic a tremendous read. There is something for everyone: plenty of action - beginning with Parkour, continuing through bombings and gun fights, and ending with a secret meeting of high level government officials - abundant emotion, death, deception and love interests, crazy friends and even stranger enemies so the excitement never stops. Hard to put down, Dimorphic is a quick read with colorful bad language and Cy Wyss engages your sense of humor, horror and hope.
