A coordinated attack on Olympus catches every dog off-guard. Buddy goes to find his brother Loki, a Hungarian Vizsla and the designated officer on duty. Loki had been trying to catch a messenger squirrel for intel but he rushes back too late to stop the assault. Thankfully, the enemy never breached the gates. Loki vows to work harder because of his mistake; however, he must first return to his family because his human, James, would be starting school soon. James has had a sinking feeling in his stomach for a while now. He doesn’t know why but he feels that something bad is about to happen. Little does he know that he will be caught in the middle of the war between dogs and demons. Join Loki, Buddy, and their human James in Dogs and Demons by R J Lee Heroux as they go through the dream realm, meet new friends, and embark on an epic adventure.

Dogs and Demons is a fantastical, coming-of-age children’s story by R J Lee Heroux. Buddy and Loki took me on an adventure I will never forget. With talking dogs, sorcerers, pixies, demons, and many more, there is never a boring moment. The characters were well-rounded and it was interesting to follow the kids as they trained in the dream realm. As I read through the first few chapters, I couldn’t help but admire James’ sharp instincts. From the outset, he could sense something was amiss and although he was constantly fearful and lacking in confidence, he overcame these feelings and did his best. This was a story of bravery, friendship, and family. It has an enthralling plot that had me hooked right from the start. I got more and more invested in the characters the deeper I got into the story.

One of the most striking features was the lessons I took away, including the importance of standing up for yourself. There are all sorts of bullies in the world, you can either be defeated by them or stand your ground. If you make yourself a target, they won’t respect you and eventually, you will lose self-respect. The book captured my attention with its smooth storyline, distinctive plot, and memorable characters. It was a pleasure to read about the kids' adventures and watch them grow from their experiences. A satisfying and exciting story. I can see myself reading this tale again in the future. Excellent work.

A beautifully crafted story. Geared towards older children or young adults, this book is full of adventure and the author weaves an engaging narrative that spans a vivid fantasy realm filled with engaging characters that will hold your interest from beginning to end. Strongly recommend this first novel by an up and coming author.

Amy Robinson

An extremely powerful story where the author takes you on an adventure through the lens of a boy. Throughout this journey, there are lots of inner turmoils and challenges which make this book a very interesting one to read. I bought it for my son and he could not stop talking about it. If you are wondering whether or not to purchase this book, do yourself a favour and buy it.
