Author Geoff Nelder brings readers two captivating short stories in Dragut's Divergence. The first titular tale follows the adventures of the Ottoman Admiral of Suleiman's fleet, Rais Dragut, a feared pirate known for abducting the people of Gozo and selling them as slaves in Libya. In this fantastical story, Dragut's fleet is caught in a storm during the Siege of Malta in 1565, and he suddenly finds himself washed ashore on the beach of Marsaskala in the present day. Mistaken as an illegal immigrant by the authorities, Dragut finds salvation in the Turkish Cemetery on Spencer Hill. In The Visit, a man named Osiris visits his master Kerin D'Gar, son of Zita and descendant of the great Admiral Rais Dragut, to work on a mysterious scheme.
Author Geoff Nelder incorporates the stories of actual historical personalities to craft two fascinating tales rich in mystery and lore. Dragut's Divergence is not for everyone, but historical fiction aficionados and readers of time-travel mysteries and fantasy will find plenty to love in this book. I thoroughly enjoyed the portrayal of Rais Dragut. The way Nelder illustrates how an actual historical figure might behave if he suddenly found himself in 21st-century Europe feels surprisingly apt. I also liked the characterization of Sergeant Anna Misfud and Malek Zammit. The second story has even more fantastical elements, which I found intriguing. Overall, it's an absorbing short story collection. If you love tales layered with mystery and actual historical lore, definitely grab a copy. I heartily recommend it.
