Life is a complicated mirage of happenings, settings, characters, and chances (and so much more). In Aaron Andreu’s Drifts, poetry, catchphrases, aphorisms, and photographs explore life through reflections across ages. His words are prophetic, and when the poetic thought hangs loose, a photograph’s image explores the implausible variance of what lives both beyond and behind. “The circumstances that surround/ our respective existence/ can neither solely be attributed to chance/ nor providence lest we become dogmatic.” The poet/photo-artist helps us explore the world through his eyes, ears, and literary genius. Memories surface through aging, sense of identity, and existence in modern life, which often brings solitude (not always a welcome sentiment), melancholy, contemplation, and thoughtful moments. And, yes, there is some humor too, because what would life really be without a chuckle or two?

Aaron Andreu’s book, Drifts: A Collection of Moments, is a thoughtfully creative look at life from one man’s perspective. The words and images are presented with care, recollecting a life well lived. The presentation is much like a memoir of sorts. Some of the literary sections are simple sentences or merely words, aphorisms; others are short poetic gems, while the photographs provide visual representations of the thoughts being shared. The author has illustrated his words with color and black-and-white photographs, the latter, as always, being more distinctly well-defined. Like drifts in the sand, the author has presented his work as individual observations, allowing the reader to make connections between all that is presented: the images, the places, and the thoughts. This is a very intense, yet at times simple memoir.
