Eafin Lokdore and the Ancient Secret is the third installment in The Lokdore Trilogy by R.G. Edwards. The story becomes more interesting with a high-stakes quest for Eafin Lokdore. This time, Eafin must travel through dangerous terrain to retrieve an Ancient Secret. He is seventeen and must accomplish this mission alone. The future is filled with uncertainty for him. He must face not only natural challenges but must also follow the sacred writings of his father and walk into The Land Beyond, which is cursed. He puts his life in danger with each step he takes forward into the unknown, but the worst yet are the cursed souls, the Thorekin, and the Valley of Shadowed Death. Will he risk everything or save himself and live to know that the Ancient Secret is lost forever?
R.G. Edwards has created a solid adventure in this exhilarating story, presenting a hero who captivated me with his quest. While this book reflects the traditional tropes of a fantasy tale filled with adventure, what kept me turning the pages was the exceptional characterization. Eafin Lokdore is a likable character. I loved following him in his fear. His internal struggles are vividly portrayed in the story, with uncertainties, fears, and the questions he asks himself at each turn of the mysterious quest. Eafin Lokdore and the Ancient Secret is fast-paced, and the suspense is built into the idea that nothing is certain, as the protagonist does not know what will happen next in his quest.
The audio rendition of this book was excellent. The narrator, Lachlan Miller, did an impeccable job, capturing the pacing, the setting's elements, and the overall atmosphere of the fantasy in a confident, clear, and measured voice. This book was delightful to listen to.
