Element of Truth by Heather Slawecki is the third and final book in the urban suspense and occult fiction Element Mystery trilogy, preceded by book one, Element of Secrecy, and book two, Element of Danger. The book picks up as protagonist and heroine Jenny O'Rourke wakes from an induced coma in a hospital room, being pressed by questions about how she ended up there, and unsure of how much even those she loves know, and whether or not she can even trust herself with the truth. Torn between the love of two men and a society that forces more questions than it is willing to answer, Jenny is ultimately faced with an initiation into a dark society she has been destined for her entire life. “Once you become a member, you will have eternal divine protection.”
Element of Truth is an exceptionally well written and highly engrossing novel, one which doubles down on suspense and intrigue, with author Heather Slawecki flexing her skills in the Element Mysteries. I admit that I hadn't read either of the first two installments and the story still instantly engaged without a hitch. That said, I am so enamored by Jenny that the backstory is something I look forward to reading. The rituals of the Order are depicted with the same depth that Slawecki gives the book's main characters, and the layering as Jenny navigates the five phases of her initiation. I believe this trilogy will find a devout and embracing fan base among readers who enjoy the work of authors such as Suzanne Collins and Liane Moriarty, and stories with an intelligent and strong female protagonist.
