Learning the alphabet is the groundwork for reading and writing. Ella Minnow P, written by Trisha Fleming and illustrated by Emanuela Mannello, is a sweet concept picture book focusing on learning the ABCs. The story begins on Ella’s first day of school. This is a day that involves asking the children to recite the alphabet. However, the first day of school goes beyond learning the alphabet. It also entails meeting the teacher and making new friends. Ella does both bravely. Even though the students tease Ella about her name, she chooses to be true to herself and to help uplift her classmates with her kindness. Through Ella’s experiences, the story hints at the importance of politeness, caring, and respect for others.
Ella is a stouthearted little girl who is clever, kind, and forgiving. The witty title, named for the main character, mimics the sounds made when reciting the L, M, N, O, and P sections of the alphabet. This is just one example of the playfulness of this picture book. The narrative is organized into simple sentences and short paragraphs, which makes the story suitable for the earliest readers. The sentences have rhythm and rhyme, making it a fun read-aloud. In addition, the full-page illustrations bring the story to life with color and visual representations of the characters and the setting. It is an overall enhancement to the story. Ella Minnow P. by Trisha Fleming is a cute book for parents to read to preschool and kindergarten children learning the alphabet.
