A Life Worth Living by Don Lehmkuhl follows the story of an eccentric professor and his young protégé over the course of two decades. Kameron Burkhardt attended Saint Augustine's University in Cincinnati, Ohio, in the late 1980s. With youthful vigor, Kameron delved into university life and found his philosophy professor to be the best mentor to teach him about life. Dr. Steve McGarr became not only a mentor but also a lifelong friend who was always there for Kameron in his time of need. The two friends support each other through heartbreaks, sickness, and failed relationships, and the bond between them grows stronger over the years. While Kameron goes on to become the president of a bank and a family man with kids, Steve continues to struggle with alcoholism. What's next in store for Kameron and Steve?

A Life Worth Living is an absorbing coming-of-age tale with plenty of humor, romance, and drama. At its core, it's a slice-of-life story that illustrates how the passage of time changes people and their relationships over the decades. When Kameron first met Steve, he saw Steve as someone invincible and followed his guidance. In the later stages of their lives, however, it's Steve who seeks Kameron's approval even as he is proud of what his former student achieved in life. The characters feel really authentic, and so does Kameron's friendship with Steve. I found the relationships to be very realistic. Additionally, Don Lehmkuhl incorporates a lot of wit, humor, and philosophical discourse into the dialogue. The ending is somewhat bittersweet, but it makes sense in hindsight. All in all, it's one of the most moving coming-of-age stories I've ever read, and I highly recommend it.
