Fortune's Final Frenzy by Tana L. H. Boerger follows Philip and Genevieve Warwick at Wilmingrove Hall, hosting Baron Friedrich von Bassewitz, his family, and other guests on a grouse shoot. During the shoot, Freddie’s ex-wife is discovered dead under suspicious circumstances, prompting a police investigation led by DCI Cecil Fields. Philip and Genevieve assist with questioning guests and evidence gathering. They then travel to Schloss Friedrichstein in Austria with the von Bassewitz family, where storms, ski trips, and social gatherings unfold. There, Baron Karl Friedrich von Bassewitz dies under mysterious conditions, and Elsa Schmidt is found frozen outside the schloss. The couple, along with Freddie, Lillie, and Finn, help manage the bodies, investigate the estate, and uncover clues suggesting connections to stolen artworks and high-value paintings intended for European museums.
Fortune’s Final Frenzy by Tana L. H. Boerger is a really wonderful journey of suspense and mystery, made even better by the places Boerger takes us. From the elegant Wilmingrove Hall in England to the snow-covered grandeur of Schloss Friedrichstein in Austria, the story is filled with sophisticated settings, intriguing guests, and unexpected developments that constantly surprise. The mix of art intrigue, high-profile estates, and carefully orchestrated crime investigations elevates an already fantastic, in-depth storyline. The characters, led by Philip and Genevieve, are an eclectic bunch, and, of course, followers of the series will be familiar with its ghostly elements, as we get to see the spirits of Rose Otto and Charlotte in play. Each revelation, twist, and encounter is better than the last, and, overall, this novel is an outstanding and thoroughly enjoyable fourth addition to the Lord and Lady Crosswick mystery series.
