Carol Story is a volunteer at Connecticut’s Beardsley Zoo and shares her knowledge and experience in the beautiful children’s book Ellie’s Day at the Zoo: Ellie's Day series. Carol takes little Ellie to the zoo for a day of adventure. There are so many animals at the zoo that seeing them all is time-consuming, but what better way to spend your time than meeting animals from around the world? Jack Bradley provided photographs of the animals, which brings to life the delightful verse. My dad’s favorite wild cat was the black leopard. I was so delighted to see that Beardsley has one and loved the photograph. Each animal has a description detailing its habitat and its endangered status. Kudos to Carol for providing this book and donating all proceeds to the zoo, as zoos are our best hope for keeping many species alive. They also breed stock to reintroduce species back into the wild.
Do you know what a Red Panda is? How about a Peccary? If not, don’t worry. After reading Ellie’s Day at the Zoo, you will know what these and many other animals are. It is up to humans to protect wild animals. We have hunted many species to extinction, while others have been endangered by humans destroying their natural habitat. It is our job to reverse the situation by increasing efforts to save animals that are being threatened. Carol Story shows how zoos are a significant player in preserving endangered species. They protect, breed, and reintroduce animals into the wild. The book shares this information and inspires children to learn about the different animals. Along with the knowledge gained, the photographs add depth to the words. For example, reading a description of an Amur Tiger is vastly different from seeing one. This book will help lead a child to live a life of conservation.
