Enough by Sharmilla Fassbender and Sharminey Selvanathan is a sweet children’s story that invites readers to slow down and see the wonder of the world around them. Through a combination of Silvia Fassbender’s illustrations and short sentences, Enough follows a small child through everyday experiences. These experiences are ones that are easy to take for granted, like feeling the sun on one’s face or grains of sand slipping through the fingers. The story is beautiful in its simplicity, which further highlights the point of the story—finding joy in the moment you are in.
The illustrations are adorable line drawings. With a simple, playful nature, the illustrations add to the overall feel of the story by highlighting the main themes: be present, mindful, and grateful. The limited use of color highlights the moments being captured: the dandelion in the wind, etcetera. The font choice and colored narrative add to the overall lighthearted tone. It is a visually appealing picture book. Enough shows the cheerful and carefree imagination of a child in acts like finding shapes in the clouds. Sight, sound, touch, and smell are brought to life in simple phrases like a bird’s singing melody. The repetition of the phrase, “Right here. Right now. Just this. Enough,” reinforces the story’s key concept as a message not only for children but for the adult reading to the child. Enough is an uplifting story that will bring joy to the hearts of children and adults. This is a recommended read full of mindfulness—a positive message for adults and children alike.
