On March 4, 1977, Romania was hit by an earthquake that devastated the country. The earthquake destroyed much infrastructure and killed many people. At the time of the earthquake, Alex lived in the city of Zimnicea with his parents. They lose their house, and his father also dies during the earthquake. They leave for Izvoarele to live at his grandparents’ house. Life in the village is very different from what Alex is used to, and he is often mocked as being weak. Alex also starts working in the fields with his grandfather. His grandfather doesn’t see the need for Alex to go to school, but his mother insists. Alex’s mother also has plans to leave Romania and go to Barcelona, where one of her sisters lives. With the help of Costel, who was his father’s friend, will Alex and his mother be able to escape the strict regime in Romania? How will things turn out in Everything Worth Counting by Mihaela Balan Larsen?
Everything Worth Counting by Mihaela Balan Larsen is an amazing read that piqued my curiosity about Romanian history, especially during the regime of Nicolae Ceaușescu, and what the people went through. This thought-provoking work also expertly captured the importance of having a supportive family and community, which can help one brave life’s challenges. I loved the steady pacing, which kept me intrigued and eager to discover the next twist in the flawlessly flowing plot. The well-crafted dialogues brought the story to life. The characters were well-developed, and the reader will also appreciate the easy-to-understand language used, which makes the work accessible to all audiences. This was a satisfying read, and I look forward to more by Mihaela Balan Larsen.
