Everywhere But Home: Life Overseas as Told by a Travel Blogger is a work of non-fiction in the travel, memoir, and slice of life sub-genres, and was penned by author Phil Rosen. After packing up and heading to Hong Kong straight after his graduation, Phil began to write about his exploits as a teacher in the city, as well as his journeys further afield exploring a whole new world. The work is split into episodic stories each focusing on different themes, but as a whole, they explore ideas of finding your true sense of self, as well as offering a fantastic guidebook to real life in Hong Kong and its surroundings.
Author Phil Rosen offers important and inspiring life lessons for other young adults wondering what to do with their lives following their graduation. This work contains two years of material which would be more than people might do in two lifetimes, and the narrative voice is observant, philosophical, and truly eye-opening as the experiences shape the author into a truer version of himself. I particularly enjoyed the discussion of expectations, and how this changes dramatically with culture, age, and experiences, which I think is a message that young adults (and indeed anyone looking for a new direction in life) ought to hear. From a travel writing perspective, this is also an authentic account of living in other places rather than just a casual visit, which is highly valuable. Overall, I would recommend Everywhere But Home to all readers with an interest in travel and alternative paths.
